Place Of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 2022

Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah is a savoury Heathcote Syrah from old vines in red Cambrian soil.

East-facing vines, better than twenty years old, on the Mount Camel Range: the northern part of Heathcote gives the district's more refined wines, though power is never far away, so this cuvée is held back an extra year in wood. The 2022 spent its first year in neutral barrels, was then blended into a 2,000-litre Stockinger cask for the rest of its maturation, and went into bottle at the end of February 2025 after three years in oak. It sits just over 13 per cent alcohol, refined and perfumed, and deep enough to last a very long time.

Refined and savoury, with dark plum, iron, bay and pepper, and tannins that are fine but numerous. The finish is long and mineral. Decant an hour and serve at 16 to 17 degrees, with slow-roast lamb, braised beef or mushrooms and lentils.
