Place of Changing Winds High Density Pinot Noir 2019

Place of Changing Winds High Density Pinot Noir comes from the estate's most closely planted vines in the Macedon Ranges.

Between 20,000 and 33,000 vines per hectare, with surrounding rows added to fill the fermenters: at that spacing nearly every task is done by hand, and yields fall to 100 to 200 grams a vine. The price reflects that, and the team are clear this is not a better wine so much as a different one. The 2019 was completely destemmed and aged in two casks, one Stockinger and one Dominique Laurent. No fining, no filtration, nothing added beyond minimal sulphur; bottled by gravity in February 2020, 568 bottles all up. How it ages will be worth watching.

Deep and textural, with black cherry, blood orange and an earthy, mineral undertow, the tannin dense but fine. Give it air. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, with duck, squab or a beef and mushroom braise.
