Description
Place of Changing Winds Larderdark Chardonnay is a low-yielding Macedon Ranges Chardonnay fermented largely in glass.
Yields tell the story: 144 grams per vine, which works out to 12 hectolitres per hectare. For context, Australian Chardonnay is generally cropped in kilos per vine, and even Grand Cru Burgundy permits at least 40 hectolitres per hectare, roughly 600 grams a vine. A quarter of that explains the drive and length here. Winemaking was simple: pressed, then to barrel and Wineglobe with all its lees for primary and a complete malolactic. Three-quarters fermented and aged in glass, and there was one new 228-litre Stockinger barrique. Bottled at the end of September 2024, 12.9 per cent, under Diam. Only 974 bottles.
Ruby grapefruit and quince, creamy lees, then an exotic note and a saline finish with air, a salinity Robert Walters puts down to the place. Deep, racy and long. Serve at 12 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a soft washed-rind cheese.
