Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 in magnum is a cool-climate Victorian Syrah drawn from two grower blocks, at Heathcote and Harcourt.

Two blocks north of Melbourne supply the fruit, Heathcote for depth and Harcourt for lift, and Rob Walters treats them with the care he gives the single-vineyard bottlings from the home estate in the Macedon Ranges. Most of the fruit went into the ferments as whole bunches, which is where the peppery, stalky spice comes from. Maturation ran across large neutral Stockinger casks and a concrete egg, and bottling waited until February 2025, close to two years after picking. A 1.5-litre format slows the whole thing down again: the same wine, more patient, and a bottle built for a table of six.

Expect black pepper, dark plum and something faintly meaty behind the fruit, with fine chalky tannin. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted an hour ahead. Lamb shoulder, grilled quail or a mushroom risotto all sit well beside it.
