Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 2024

Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 is a light to medium-bodied Syrah built for early drinking, blended from Heathcote and Harcourt.

Seventy per cent of the 2024 blend grew on the Cambrian soils of the Mount Camel Range at Heathcote, the balance on pure granitic sand at Harcourt. Fifteen separate ferments were run, some fully destemmed, some entirely whole cluster, most somewhere between, which is a great deal of bookkeeping for the estate's most affordable red. Small and medium oak held the wine through its first year, larger vessels through its second, and a quarter sat in concrete throughout to keep the fruit unvarnished. A cool season has given a wine closer in weight to Pinot Noir than to the fuller Heathcote style.

Slinky and floral, sappy through the middle, closing on macerated red berries and powdery tannin. A light chill suits it, 14 to 16 degrees. Try it with roast chicken, charcuterie or grilled tuna; it handles a summer barbecue better than most Shiraz.
