Place of Changing Winds Tradition 2019

Place of Changing Winds Tradition is a blend of estate Pinot Noir and Heathcote Syrah, made in the old Australian manner.

The blend looks back to the Hunter Valley of the 1940s and 50s, when Maurice O'Shea put Pinot Noir and Shiraz in the same vat and made some of the greatest reds this country has produced. Estate Pinot from the Macedon Ranges does the perfuming here; Heathcote Syrah supplies the flesh and the spice. Maturation ran through a range of casks, mostly large-format Stockinger, and the wine was bottled by gravity in February 2020 with no fining, no filtration and very little sulphur. Just 1,528 bottles were filled, which makes it a small wine in every sense but flavour.

Juicy and red-fruited with a sweet-sour edge and plenty of spice, light on its feet. Serve it cool, around 15 degrees, and do not fear a slight chill. Good with roast duck, cured meats, or a tomato and anchovy tart.
