Place of Changing Winds Tradition Red 2022

Place of Changing Winds Tradition Red is a Pinot Noir and Syrah blend from the Macedon Ranges and Heathcote.

Forty per cent Pinot Noir off the estate vines, sixty per cent Syrah grown at Heathcote and Harcourt: the ratio moves with the season, because the wine is only assembled in years that suit it. Maturation began in a mix of large and small oak, most of it well used, and finished in steel tank and a 600-litre Stockinger cask before bottling at the end of November 2023. The template is Maurice O'Shea's Hunter reds of the 1940s and 50s, a style Australia abandoned and has only recently begun to revisit. Rob Walters was importing Burgundy long before he planted a vine, which explains the light hand.

Perfume first, rose and raspberry and black pepper, then a bright, juicy palate with gentle tannin. Lovely now, steady for years. Fifteen to sixteen degrees is the mark. Pour it with roast quail, a charcuterie board or mushrooms on toast.
