Place of Changing Winds Tradition White 2022

Place of Changing Winds Tradition White is a Macedon Ranges white blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Chardonnay.

Marsanne and Roussanne are unusual plantings for a cool Victorian site, and they make up two-thirds of this blend, the fleshy and slightly waxy part. The other third is Chardonnay, fermented and raised in a new Tronçais cask from Dominique Laurent, and it does the sharpening. Élevage began in 500-litre casks, glass Wineglobes and seasoned barriques, then moved to steel for a second year before bottling in late November 2023. The estate is better known for Pinot Noir and Syrah grown at extreme vine densities; this white began as an experiment in the cellar and earned its place.

Textural and savoury: white peach, dried pear, almond skin and a saline finish. Eleven to twelve degrees, in a decent-sized glass. It handles richer food than most Australian whites, so think roast pork, chicken pie, or a semi-hard alpine cheese.
