Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo DOCG Cicala is a single vineyard Barolo from a parcel of the Bussia amphitheatre at Monforte d'Alba.

Aldo Conterno left the family firm in 1969 to set up on his own in the Bussia district of Monforte d'Alba, and the estate is now among the most admired in Piedmont. Cicala lies within Bussia Soprana, between Colonnello below and Romirasco above, on soils of calcareous marl with a higher proportion of clay than its neighbours. That difference is the reason the family has long bottled the three parcels apart rather than blending them. The Nebbiolo is of the Michet and Lampia subvarieties. The wine is made in the traditional Piedmontese way, with an extended fermentation on skins and maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, then a further period in bottle before it is released.

Best with braised beef, game or a dish of tajarin with truffle; decant it well ahead, serve at about 18 degrees, and give it time in the cellar.
