Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs Gift Box 2016

Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs Gift Box is a vintage Champagne made entirely from Chardonnay, presented as a single bottle in the house's gift box.

Founded in Épernay in 1849 and still family owned, this is one of the few great Champagne houses to remain independent. The Blanc de Blancs is only made in good years and draws on Chardonnay from grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs: Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The juice is settled twice, the second time cold, then fermented slowly in stainless steel, with each village kept separate until blending. All of the wines go through malolactic fermentation. The bottles then mature in the house's deep chalk cellars, some 33 metres below ground, where they are still riddled by hand, a practice that has become rare in Champagne.

Serve well chilled, at around 8 to 10 degrees, in a white wine glass so the wine has room to open up. It is a fine, dry and mineral style that suits oysters, scallops, sashimi, grilled white fish or a simple roast chicken. It drinks well now and has the freshness to keep developing in the cellar for a good number of years.
