Description
Pooley Wines Butcher's Hill Riesling is a single-vineyard Riesling from the family's Butcher's Hill site near Richmond.
Pooley Wines is a family estate in the Coal River Valley near Richmond, north east of Hobart, where the Pooley family planted their first vines in the mid 1980s and a third generation now runs the business, with Anna Pooley making the wines. The Coal River Valley sits in the rain shadow of the hills around Hobart, making it one of the driest and sunniest corners of Tasmania, yet the island's cool maritime climate keeps ripening slow and acidity high. Butcher's Hill is a single vineyard near Richmond whose Riesling is bottled separately to show the character of the site. The fruit is fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve purity and the wine is bottled under screwcap. Released with some bottle age, it shows how well Tasmanian Riesling develops over time while keeping its line of acidity.
Precise and mineral, it suits scallops, pork belly and Asian seafood dishes; serve chilled at around 9 degrees.
