Pooley Wines Syrah 2024

Pooley Wines Syrah is a cool-climate Coal River Valley Syrah from a family estate in conversion to organic farming.

Pooley Wines is a family estate in the Coal River Valley near Richmond, north east of Hobart, where the Pooley family planted their first vines in the mid 1980s and a third generation now runs the business, with Anna Pooley making the wines. The Coal River Valley sits in the rain shadow of the hills around Hobart, making it one of the driest and sunniest corners of Tasmania, yet the island's cool maritime climate keeps ripening slow and acidity high. That warmth and dryness make the valley one of the few parts of the island where Syrah ripens reliably, producing a fresh, peppery and savoury style closer to the northern Rhône than to mainland Shiraz. The estate is in conversion to organic viticulture. The wine is matured in oak and bottled under screwcap.

Savoury and spicy, it suits lamb, venison and charcuterie; serve at around 16 degrees.
