Porseleinberg Syrah 2021

Porseleinberg Syrah is a single-estate Swartland Syrah and one of South Africa's most sought-after reds.

The Porseleinberg farm sits on steep, stony schist slopes near Riebeek-Kasteel, and has been owned by Boekenhoutskloof since the late 2000s. It is farmed by Callie Louw, who also makes the wine with minimal intervention, mostly in concrete and large old foudres, so the site speaks clearly. 2021 was the fourth vintage using a submerged-cap fermentation, which highlights the estate's distinctive tannins. The wine starts reserved, then opens to red and black fruit, minerals and savoury spice, with crunchy, grippy yet fine tannins and a long, salty finish.

Serve at around 17 to 18 degrees after an hour or two in a decanter. Pair it with lamb rump, game birds or duck with cherries. It will reward cellaring for 10 years or more.
