Description

Primo Estate Il Briccone Shiraz Sangiovese is a spicy, savoury McLaren Vale red that marries Australian and Italian grapes.

The Grilli family's Italian heritage runs through the whole Primo Estate range, and Il Briccone, Italian for 'the rascal', is a good example. Joe Grilli established the winery in 1979, and today it is based in McLaren Vale, where a Mediterranean climate suits Italian varieties as comfortably as it does Shiraz. Here Shiraz provides plum, pepper and a full-bodied frame, while Sangiovese brings a burst of red cherry, fresh acidity and a savoury finish. The combination is generous yet lively, sitting somewhere between a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz and a Tuscan red.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. It is made for the dinner table: think wood-fired pizza, pork and fennel sausages, lasagne or pasta with a rich ragù.
