Proprietà Sperino Lessona DOC 2019

Proprietà Sperino Lessona DOC is a Nebbiolo from Lessona, one of the small historic appellations of Alto Piemonte in the far north of the region.

Lessona sits in the hills below the Alps, near Gattinara and Ghemme, on ancient marine sands that are acidic and poor, quite unlike the calcareous marls of the Langhe. The area was celebrated in the nineteenth century, when northern Piedmont had far more vineyard than the Barolo hills, then all but vanished after phylloxera and the pull of the Biella textile mills drew people away from the land. Proprietà Sperino was brought back at the end of the 1990s by Paolo De Marchi, better known for Isole e Olena in Tuscany, and is now run by his son Luca. The wines are made in a deliberately traditional manner, with long macerations and ageing in large wood.

Decant, then serve at cool room temperature with roast or braised meat, mushrooms or aged alpine cheese. It rewards a decade or more in the cellar.
