Description
Prunotto Dolcetto d'Alba is the everyday red of the Langhe, from a grape that ripens early and is drunk young in its home region.
Dolcetto d'Alba covers the hills around Alba, the same country that gives Barolo and Barbaresco their Nebbiolo, though Dolcetto is generally planted on the sites that ripen fastest and where Nebbiolo would struggle to finish. Its name means little sweet one, a reference to the fruit on the vine rather than the wine, which is made dry. Prunotto has been part of Alba's wine trade since 1904 and took the family name in 1923; the house was among the first to bottle Langhe vineyards individually and is now owned by the Antinori family. The Dolcetto is fermented quickly and kept largely away from new oak so the variety is presented without embellishment.
A natural match for salumi, pizza, tomato based pasta and Piedmontese antipasti; serve a little cool, at 15 to 16°C, and drink within a few years of release.
