Pyramid Valley Central Otago Mānatu Pinot Noir 2022

Pyramid Valley Central Otago Mānatu Pinot Noir is a multi-block Pinot from the estate's organic Lowburn vineyard.

The name honours the ribbonwood tree, and the vineyard it labels was called Lowburn Ferry when Jean and Roger Gibson planted it in 2000 on a gentle north slope, 30 per cent of the vines own-rooted and the clonal mix deliberately wide. Pyramid Valley took it on in 2018; BioGro certified it organic in 2022. Two wines come off the site, this selection of blocks and a single-parcel bottling in the Botanical Selection. Ten per cent whole bunches went into open concrete and oak fermenters on wild yeast, then twelve months in French oak with a fifth new, and six months on light lees in concrete and wood.

Dark cherry and plum with Otago's inbuilt energy, a chalky drive underneath and tannins that glide. Sixteen degrees. There is weight here for venison, char-grilled lamb or a duck ragù, and enough acidity for a mushroom and barley risotto.
