Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2023

Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir is a biodynamic single-block Pinot from Waikari in North Canterbury.

Cold nights and dry summers define the inland Waikari valley, and the limestone beneath it is why Pinot Noir is grown here at all. This is the richer of the estate's two Pinot sites: a broad east-facing slope with about 30 per cent clay over limestone bedrock, planted in 2000 at 11,111 vines per hectare and farmed biodynamically throughout. The block takes its name from fumitory, a poppy-family plant that thrives among the rows. Picked later than its neighbour, it reliably gives the darker, firmer wine of the pair, with more fruit weight and a savoury undertow.

Dark-fruited and structured, with black cherry, dried herb and a graphite edge, and tannin that is fine but unmistakably there. Give it air, serve at 16 degrees, or cellar it. Roast venison, beef short rib, or lentils with smoked eggplant.
