Pyramid Valley Korimako Pinot Noir 2020

Pyramid Valley Korimako Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot from a grower site above Mackenzies Road in Waipara.

The vineyard belongs to James Course-Choi, and it is reputedly the only Pinot Noir planting in Waipara to face northeast, an unusual aspect in a district where north and east faces are the norm. Guy Porter planted it in 2004 to clone 5, one of the Pommard selections that reached New Zealand via California in the mid-1970s, and it holds BioGro certification. Huw Kinch had the harvest hand-sorted down to perfectly ripe fruit, fermented it wild with a third whole bunches in wooden cuves for three weeks, then pressed, settled and aged it eighteen months in French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in September 2021.

Red cherry, raspberry leaf and a warm spice edge, the palate mid-weight with fine dusty tannin and a savoury finish. Fifteen to sixteen degrees. Roast duck, pork with prunes, or a mushroom and thyme tart all suit it.
