Pyramid Valley Lion's Tooth Chardonnay 2023

Pyramid Valley Lion's Tooth Chardonnay is a biodynamic single-block Chardonnay from North Canterbury.

Yields at 12.5 hectolitres per hectare are barely worth the harvest labour in commercial terms, which tells you something about how this block is farmed. It is a steep, east-facing plot on the classic Waikari limestone and clay, though with a higher clay fraction than the estate's other Chardonnay site, enough to keep the dandelions that gave the vineyard its name thriving in the rows. The oldest vines went in during 2000 at 11,111 vines per hectare and supply most of the wine. Farming is biodynamic, as it has been since planting. Only 126 six-packs were made in 2023, so very few people will taste it.

Flint, toast, mandarin peel and orange blossom on the nose; the palate is concentrated and focused, with bursts of acidity and the phenolic breadth this block always delivers. Impeccable length. Twelve degrees. Serve with roast chicken, scallops or aged gruyère.
