Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Orange 2020

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Orange is a skin-fermented white, mostly Pinot Gris, from two North Canterbury vineyards.

The blend runs 87 per cent Pinot Gris with small amounts of Muscat, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Pinot Gris came from the Porters vineyard in Waipara and the Riesling from Three Sisters, while the Muscat and Gewürztraminer grew on Domett clay. Everything went into 1,000-litre open-top fermenters as whole bunches for up to three weeks, then pressed off to old barrels and clay amphorae for six months before an unfined, unfiltered bottling. Gary Walsh described it as a nod to the former owners of the estate, who had a long habit of making things nobody else in New Zealand was making. Sealed under screwcap.

Apricot skin, orange peel and dried herb, with gentle tannin and a dry, savoury finish. Treat it like a light red at 13 to 14 degrees. It handles spice and fat well, so think pork belly, tagine, or a cheese board with quince paste.
