Description
Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Orange is a skin-fermented white blend from three Waipara vineyards.
Five varieties go into the 2021: Pinot Gris at four-fifths, then Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and slivers of Muscat and Gewürztraminer, across three sustainably farmed Waipara sites. Porters supplied most of it, Fraher some of the Sauvignon Blanc, and the Riesling came off Three Sisters, planted on gravel between 2001 and 2004. Parcels fermented as whole bunches in 1,000-litre open-tops for anywhere from ten days to three weeks, then pressed to clay amphorae and old barrels for eight months. No fining, no filtration. Skin-fermented white is a genre full of faults, and this one is made with the discipline of the estate's expensive Pinot.
Aromatically wide, with mandarin, dried flowers and ginger, a chewy grippy middle and a clean, bitter-edged finish. Serve it at 13 degrees. Roast pumpkin and feta, chicken with saffron, charcuterie, or a plate of hard cheeses.
