Description
Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Orange is a skin-fermented white drawn from four vineyards across two regions.
Composition shifts every year, and in 2023 Pinot Gris fell to 62 per cent with Sauvignon Blanc at 23 and Pinot Noir, vinified as a white, at 14, plus a seasoning of Gewürztraminer, Muscat and Viognier. Four vineyards feed it: Course-Choi on Mackenzies Road, the Good Family and Fraher sites on Omihi clay, and Pinot Noir from the estate's Lowburn vineyard in Central Otago. Whole bunches sat twelve to twenty-four days in open-top fermenters, with a little blanc de noir pressing added during the ferment, before six months in concrete and old barrels without sulphur. Huw Kinch is chasing the best orange wine in the southern hemisphere and closing in.
Tangy and moreish, with tangerine, dried apricot and a dry, powdery finish licked by something Campari-like. Chill it lightly, 13 degrees. Serve with charcuterie, roast chicken and preserved lemon, a spiced vegetable curry, or a plate of hard cheese.
