Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2023

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir is a regional Pinot from three BioGro-certified vineyards.

All three vineyards behind the 2023 hold BioGro certification: the Good Family vineyard on Georges Road in Waipara, on Glasnevin gravels, takes just under half; the Course-Choi vineyard on Mackenzies Road, planted in 2004 on east-facing Domett clay, takes most of the rest; and a small slice comes off the estate's Waikari vines, planted in 2000 on clay and limestone. Picking ran through April. Fully destemmed, fermented on wild yeasts in open-top vessels, twelve months in French oak with 14 per cent new, then five months on light lees in wooden cuves. A cool wet season broken by warm spells built healthy canopies and clean fruit.

Bright ruby, with wild herb, forest floor, red fruit and florals; dense and chalky through the middle, gamey at the edges, with a juicy acid core giving it length. Sixteen degrees. Venison, duck or roasted root vegetables. It will age.
