Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Sauvignon + 2023

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Sauvignon + is a dry Sauvignon Blanc from two North Canterbury vineyards.

No Pinot Gris in the 2023, so this is all Sauvignon Blanc, from the BioGro-certified Good Family vineyard on Glasnevin gravels and the Fraher vineyard on Omihi clay. Fruit from both sites was pressed as whole bunches, and the juice fermented in tulip-shaped concrete vats with a few old barrels alongside. Eight per cent fermented on skins, and malolactic conversion was allowed to run, both of which take the edge off the acidity while leaving the lift alone. It is the best release yet under this label, and about as far from the standard New Zealand version of the variety as you can get.

Pulpy and multi-layered, with citrus, herb and stone fruit over mouth-watering acidity and real tension. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees. Try it with fish tacos, a green salad with feta and mint, grilled sardines, or chicken with tarragon.
