Pyramid Valley Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir 2022

Pyramid Valley Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir is a single-parcel Central Otago Pinot from a block of Abel clone at the Mānatu vineyard.

This comes off 0.7 hectares of Abel clone planted in 2007, inside a 1.9-hectare block at the southeast corner of the 10.2-hectare property, on a gentle north-facing slope in the Lowburn foothills of the Pisa Ranges. Jean and Roger Gibson planted the property in the mid-2000s, when it was Lowburn Ferry, and loess over deep silts with lime deposits formed in the soil convinced Huw Kinch, Nick Paulin and Steve Smith MW to buy it. Lowburn sees more sun than the estate's Canterbury slopes, so there is a core of power here the northern sites do not give. Fermented in an open concrete tulip with a third whole bunches.

Deep and powerful, with spiced dark cherry, five-spice and a firm but polished tannin frame. Give it air and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Venison, duck breast with plum, or slow-cooked beef cheek. It will improve for years.
