Description
Quealy Balnarring Pinot Grigio is a dry, steely Grigio from the estate's warmer coastal blocks.
Grigio and Gris are treated as genuinely different wines at this address, and the Grigio comes off the warmer, lower vineyards near the winery, Hester and the Campbell and Christine, both organically managed and both within three kilometres of the cellar. Only the most delicate slice of the press cycle is taken, which keeps the yield per tonne very low. Ferments are wild. The Gris gets a little lees stirring while this is left untouched, because Tom McCarthy is after steeliness and tension. The wine is sulphured late and bottled unfiltered. The family has been arguing for Australian Grigio since the early 1990s.
Nashi pear, citrus and ripe stone fruit lead into a zesty, lip-smacking mouthfeel with more textural depth than Australian Grigio usually manages. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. Try it with scallops, a chicken and fennel salad, or a plate of charcuterie.
