Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir 2024

Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot from low-yielding vines behind Balnarring village.

Three passes through the vineyard in 2024, on 27 and 29 February and then 5 March, brought fruit in pristine condition and again in paltry quantity. Most of it was destemmed to small vats, a portion fermented in barrel, and the wine pressed after 22 days to hogsheads with a quarter new for ten months. The block itself is dry-grown, north-facing and fully exposed at 30 metres above sea level, planted in 1994 by the Penfolds, mostly to MV6. Alluvial clay and red soils off Red Hill give the small, glossy bunches the estate prizes here.

Concentrated and muscular by Mornington standards, with black cherry, plum skin, spice and firm, fine-grained tannin. Decant it and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Roast lamb shoulder, duck, or lentils braised with bacon and thyme.
