Description
Quealy Friulano is a skin-contact white from a single organic block on the Mornington Peninsula.
The block was grafted over 1996 Chardonnay in 2004, using cuttings traced back to Denis Pasut's vineyard in Mildura, and it sits on the certified organic, dry-grown home vineyard at Balnarring. Yields are halved at flowering and the canopy managed carefully for sun exposure, because this variety rewards nothing but attention. Picking came late, on 27 April; the destemmed fruit rested on skins at cool temperatures for thirteen days, and only the free run was taken off to a large tank for full malolactic conversion before maturing in barrel until bottling. Small berries and a small crop in 2022 mean a great deal of flavour in not much liquid.
Perfumed and ripe, with orchard fruit, pepper spice and a smooth, unctuous texture crimped by phenolic grip. It drinks more like a light red in company. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast pork, mushroom risotto, or a board of hard alpine cheeses.
