Description
Quealy Halarah Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot from one of the most exposed sites on the Mornington Peninsula.
Kelly and John Ballis planted this vineyard in 1995, and Quealy has managed it since 2021, making it the newest addition to the stable. It faces northwest and climbs to 180 metres on rich volcanic soils, in one of the most southerly and most exposed positions on the Peninsula. Cold spring winds off the bay cut yields hard in cool years, and it is always the last Pinot block picked, so it comes into its own in warmer seasons. Four clones are planted, MV6 alongside D2V5, D5V12 and G5V15, and all four went into the 2024. Fruit was fully destemmed, held 28 days on skins, then aged twelve months in French hogsheads with a quarter new.
Juicy red fruit with black cherry depth underneath, earth, spice and a lift of tea leaf and flowers. Supple and seductive, svelte in structure, finishing fine and juicy. Serve at 16 degrees. Duck, roast pork, or grilled mushrooms with thyme and garlic.
