Quealy KK01 Pinot Noir 2020

Quealy KK01 Pinot Noir is an early-drinking certified organic Pinot from the Balnarring home vineyard.

The fruit comes off the 1996 plantings, a parcel known around the winery as the Carpark Block, sitting right beside the old Seventeen Rows vines. The label name is a throwback to an earlier T'Gallant wine, which Kevin McCarthy calls a nice piece of nonsense history. The brief is straightforward: a delicious, early-drinking Pinot made with minimum interference. That means a strong carbonic element, less time on skins than the estate's serious reds, very little sulphur, and no oak newer than five years. The MV6 vines are trained to an arch cane to get light into every part of the canopy, and the block is dry-grown, which shows in the concentration.

Crunchy red cherry and raspberry with a faint carbonic lift and soft, easy tannin. Chill it lightly, 14 degrees is about right, and drink it young. Charcuterie, roast chicken, sausages off the barbecue, or a mushroom pizza.
