Quealy KK01 Pinot Noir 2022

Quealy KK01 Pinot Noir is an unoaked-tasting, early-drinking Pinot from two organic blocks at Balnarring.

Two blocks of dry-grown MV6, planted in 1996 a stone's throw from the famous Seventeen Rows vines, feed this wine, and the home vineyard has been certified organic for years. The aim has always been immediate charm: fruit destemmed and fermented as whole berries with no plunging at all, pressed after twelve days and put into seasoned puncheons for twelve months, with little sulphur and no new wood anywhere near it. Shorter skin contact is the main structural difference from the estate's Seventeen Rows bottling. Yields in 2022 were dramatically low. Four releases in, this has moved from novelty to fixture in the range.

Fresh berry fragrance with savoury, spicy depth underneath and a light, supple frame. Drink it young and cool, 14 degrees. Charcuterie, roast chicken, duck sausages, or a tart of tomato and goat's cheese. A lightly chilled glass suits a warm afternoon.
