Description
Quealy KK01 Pinot Noir is a charming, early-drinking organic Pinot Noir from the Mornington Peninsula.
Five years in, this has settled into the range as the early-drinking red. Fruit comes from two blocks of younger, dry-grown MV6 planted in 1994 at the certified organic Balnarring vineyard, close to the old Seventeen Rows plot. Picking took two days at the end of March. Destemmed and left as whole berries, it fermented without any plunging and was pressed after 27 days, then matured fourteen months in seasoned puncheons and bottled unfined and unfiltered. A strong carbonic character, minimal sulphur and no new wood are all deliberate. Yields in 2023 were smaller again than in 2022, which is the cost of farming this way through a wet spring.
A charming nose of red flowers and berries opens to a flowing, fleshy palate flecked with blood orange and amaro herbs. Zesty and moreish. Serve at 14 degrees, lightly chilled. Charcuterie, roast chicken, or grilled radicchio with anchovy.
