Description
Quealy KK01 Pinot Noir is a spontaneously fermented organic Pinot from two old blocks at Balnarring.
Two blocks of MV6 planted in 1994 at the winery vineyard supply this, trained to arching canes so bud burst and growth stay even across the vine. The site is certified organic and managed with compost and cover crops instead of sprays and fertiliser. Fruit came in through the middle weeks of March, spent fifteen days on skins with a spontaneous ferment, then twelve months in seasoned hogsheads. There is no new oak and very little intervention; the point has always been to get the vineyard into the glass while the fruit is still crunchy. The label is a nod to an old T'Gallant wine from the family's first venture.
Light-footed and juicy, with red cherry, cranberry and a savoury herb edge over fine tannin. Best young and best cool, so 14 degrees. Serve with charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled salmon, or a mushroom and thyme tart on a warm evening.
