Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay 2025

Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay is a single-parcel Chardonnay from an ultra-cool pocket of Main Ridge.

An acre of vines, planted in the mid-1990s and sitting 150 metres up on basalt-derived volcanic soil, dry-grown, own-rooted and multi-clonal: this is a very small and very specific parcel of Mornington, in one of the coolest pockets on the ridge. Hand-picking fell on 15 March, and the whole bunches were pressed straight to barrel for a wild ferment. Ten months followed in French oak puncheons, a quarter of them new, with the wine left largely undisturbed to build texture. Tom McCarthy's ongoing interest in single-vineyard fruit is what keeps this in the range, and his feel for the variety is what makes it work.

Muscular and fine at the same time, with stone fruit and citrus, barrel-derived richness and cool-climate tension holding it all in line. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken with lemon, grilled scallops, or spaghetti with crab and chilli.
