Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Noir 2023

Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Noir is a savoury, medium-light Pinot Noir grown on mature dry-grown vines at Main Ridge.

Late ripening is the defining fact of this site. At 150 metres on the ridge, with no irrigation and rich red soils beneath, the fruit hangs long after the warmer Peninsula blocks have been picked, which is exactly why crops are kept small and the canopy worked hard. The 2023 was hand-picked on 5 April and fermented over twenty-eight days in two-tonne vats, fully destemmed once again because the low berry-to-stalk ratio made bunches more risk than reward. Plunging was kept to a minimum and the press was gentle. Thirteen months on full lees in French hogsheads, a quarter of them new, then bottling without fining or filtration.

Expect suede-textured tannin, finely pitched acidity and a savoury register of cranberry, dried herb and iron. Fifteen degrees, and give it half an hour open. Confit duck, lentils with pancetta, or a wedge of aged comte will all read well with it.
