Quealy Pinot Grigio 2020

Quealy Pinot Grigio is a dry, medium-bodied Pinot Grigio drawn from three vineyards at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula.

Three Balnarring sites feed this bottling, the organic home vineyard among them, where old dry-grown vines on shallow clay give very little fruit and a great deal of character. Kathleen Quealy has argued the Grigio case in Australia for decades, and the style here owes more to Friuli and Alto Adige than to anything sweeter or softer. Whole bunches went straight to press and the juice settled overnight without any sulphur. A fifth of it spent just four weeks in François Frères puncheons, a stint chosen partly to take the edge off those barrels before the Pinot Noir arrived, and was then folded back into the stainless-steel portion.

Nashi pear, lemon pith and a faint almond bitterness, with a dry, gently grippy finish. Serve it cold but not icy, around 10 degrees. Good with prawns off the barbecue, a plate of prosciutto, or fried whitebait and lemon.
