Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir 2023

Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir is a small-production Pinot Noir from the oldest vines on the family's Balnarring vineyard.

Low and even is how the 2023 crop came in, and on a block like this that combination is close to ideal. The property was planted in 1982 and bought by the family in 2003, and seventeen rows of MV6 still stand from that original planting, sitting on a gentle north-facing slope over shallow loam and clay. Organic certification came through in 2019. Because so little fruit is involved, everything about the handling is scaled down and gentle, and the wine is always the most structured and savoury in the range, closer in spirit to Burgundy than to the fruit-forward end of Australian Pinot.

Small red fruits, iron and undergrowth, with a firm but polished tannin frame and a long, dry finish. Fifteen degrees, and it will reward a decant. Serve with roast duck, mushroom ragu on soft polenta, or a plate of charcuterie.
