Description
Quealy Turbul Friulano is an unfined, unfiltered skin-contact Friulano from the Mornington Peninsula, made in terracotta amphora and old puncheon.
Eighteen months in two used puncheons, after fermentation on skins in a trio of terracotta amphorae, two of 800 litres and one of 300, is the shape of this wine. The juice and skins were basket-pressed before racking to wood, and the only sulphur is a trace at pressing. Bottling came without fining or filtration. Friulano gives the northeast of Italy some of its best whites, and it reached Australia in the 1970s; the vines at Balnarring were grafted onto 1996 Chardonnay roots in 2003 and are worked for small crops, which is the only way the variety repays the effort.
Amber-gold in the glass, with dried citrus, chamomile, hazelnut and a dry, tannic finish. Serve at 13 degrees and give it air. Roast pork with apple, mushroom pasta, or a generous plate of salumi and hard cheese will all hold their own.
