Quealy Turbul Malvasia 2023

Quealy Turbul Malvasia is a long-raised, skin-contact Malvasia Istriana from the Mornington Peninsula.

Twenty-four months in a single seasoned hogshead sets this apart from its predecessor, and the extra time shows as grace more than weight. Fermentation and the early maceration took place in a small steel tank, the wine left there until the first day of spring before pressing, and only the soft pressings went to barrel. Bottling followed, with no fining and no filtration. The variety is a Friulian specialist's grape, planted here in the smallest quantity of anything on the estate, and Tom McCarthy treats it much as he treats the Friulano beside it: hands off, oxygen allowed in slowly, sulphur kept low.

The most graceful wine in this range, layered with confit orange and grapefruit peel and a lingering white-pepper spice. The texture wraps the palate while chalky restraint keeps it in check. Serve at 13 degrees alongside roast chicken, pumpkin ravioli, or a wedge of comte.
