Quinta da Muradella Monterrei Alanda Blanco 2021

Alanda Blanco is Quinta da Muradella's core white, assembled from small plots across all three subzones of Monterrei.

Monterrei lies in south-eastern Galicia on the Portuguese border, a warmer and drier corner of the region than Rias Baixas, with rocky soils that are mainly decomposed slate mixed with granite and clay. Jose Luis Mateo has spent his career recovering old majuelos, the small scattered parcels typical of the appellation, and farms them biodynamically at low yields. Alanda, roughly 'get going', blends Treixadura, Dona Blanca and Verdelho. The varieties are fermented together, added progressively to the vat as they come in, then matured in a combination of 1,500-litre used French oak foudre and stainless steel, so the wood works as a vessel rather than a flavouring. The wine that results is succulent and deep while keeping the mineral resonance and drive that mark Mateo's whites; our own note settled on the phrase liquid stone.

Ready now and capable of several years in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with octopus, roast chicken or a bowl of steamed clams.
