Description

Quinta da Muradella Alanda Tinto is a co-fermented field blend drawn from a mosaic of high-altitude organic plots across Monterrei.

Monterrei lies in the south-east of Galicia on the Portuguese border, a warmer and drier corner of the region than Rías Baixas, and Quinta da Muradella has spent years there recovering near-lost local varieties. The red Alanda is built on Mencía with Bastardo, known elsewhere as Merenzao or Trousseau, and Garnacha Tintorera, plus a small proportion of the white grape Doña Blanca. The fruit comes from a spread of organically farmed vineyards at altitude, over soils that include slate, granite and clay, so the wine reads as a survey of the Monterrei landscape rather than of a single site. One-third of the grapes are de-stemmed and everything is fermented together. The wine is aged for thirteen months in used oak barrels and a further six months in vat before bottling.

Drinking well now with several years in hand. Serve at 16°C with roast pork, empanada or a plate of grilled mushrooms.
