Description
Quinta da Muradella Gorvia Blanco is an almost pure Doña Blanca from a 1.2-hectare slate vineyard beside Monterrei Castle in Galicia.
Monterrei sits in the south-east of Galicia on the Portuguese border, a warmer and drier pocket than the Atlantic-facing DOs to the west. José Luis Mateo took over the Gorvia site around twenty-seven years ago and has since replanted parts of it with mass-selection cuttings from the ancient A Trabe mountain vineyard. The 1.2-hectare plot lies in the north-western Pazo de Monterrei subzone at 400 metres, on a slope of slate and schist carrying a good deal of iron, and is farmed on biodynamic principles. Mateo bottles both a red and a white from it. The Blanco is made almost entirely from Doña Blanca, fermented with one-third whole bunches in a neutral 1,500-litre foudre and a 500-litre barrel for a year, then blended and returned to stainless steel for a further year before bottling. The result is deep, savoury and chalky rather than aromatic.
Drinking well now and with the depth to hold for a decade. Serve with roast turbot, pork belly or a mature hard cheese at 10 to 12°C.
