Description
Quinta da Muradella Monterrei Gorvia Tinto is a single-vineyard field blend of around 95 per cent Mencía from the far west of Spain.
Monterrei sits in the south-east of Galicia against the Portuguese border, a warmer, more continental pocket than the Atlantic zones to the west, and José Luis Mateo is the grower who did most to establish its reputation. Gorvia is a singular site, and the red comes from the same vineyard as the Gorvia Blanco: alongside the dominant Mencía there are small amounts of Bastardo and Caíño Redondo interplanted in the old fashion. Fermentation was carried out with 60 per cent whole bunches in a wooden vat, followed by an extended post-fermentation maceration, after which the wine was racked into a range of old casks, none of them new. The balance is the point here — power held against lightness and restraint, with field strawberry and sweet cherry, generous texture hemmed in by silky tannins, and lively acidity carrying a long mineral finish.
Drinking well now and worth another five to ten years in bottle. Serve at 16°C with roast lamb, grilled octopus or a plate of jamón and aged sheep's cheese.
