Description

Quinta da Muradella Sabrego is an experimental Doña Blanca grown on granitic sand, made to show what that rock type does to the variety.

Sabrego is the local word for granite, and that is the whole point of the cuvée. Most of the better-known vineyard land in Monterrei, in the far south-east of Galicia, is slate; here José Luis Mateo went looking for granite and found it in a vineyard planted in granitic sands at 440 metres in the sparsely populated Oímbra district, on the Portuguese border. Doña Blanca is a Galician white variety that can turn out neutral in the wrong setting, and Mateo's argument is that the soil supplies the definition it needs. The wine is raised on lees in stainless steel alone, with no oak at any stage, and bottled unfiltered so nothing is stripped out. It is a narrow, small-volume experiment rather than a commercial line, and it reads as one.

Drink it over the next few years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, salt cod or a simple vegetable tart.
