Quinta do Noval Fine Tawny NV

Quinta do Noval Fine Tawny is an entry-level tawny port aged more than three years in large oak vats in the Douro rather than downriver at Gaia.

Quinta do Noval is one of the historic estates of the Cima Corgo, above Pinhão. Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca are the principal varieties here, sourced from the estate itself and from Noval's A-category growers, fortified in the traditional way and then held for three years and more in large oak vats before final blending and bottling. Ageing in the Douro rather than in the cooler cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia matters: the higher rate of evaporation up-country concentrates the wine and gives it more fruitcake richness and a darker colour than most tawnies at this level. The result shows an intense brick colour, a complex nose of youthful cherry fruit and anise, and a medium-sweet palate with rich fruit and a fresh, tangy close.

Drink it on release; an open bottle keeps for several weeks. Serve slightly chilled as an aperitif, as they do at the estate and across France, or at room temperature with dark chocolate desserts or coffee.
