Description
Quinta do Noval Tawny 20yo is made entirely from fruit grown on the Noval estate itself, which sets it apart from the house's ten-year-old.
Aged tawny Port is blended from casks of different ages to an average, in this case 20 years, and matures in wood in the Douro or at Vila Nova de Gaia, slowly losing colour and gaining nutty, oxidative complexity. Quinta do Noval, founded in 1715, sits above the Pinhão valley and is unusual among Port houses in being a single estate that controls its own viticulture. Where the ten-year-old draws on purchased lots, this bottling is entirely estate fruit from the classic Douro field-blend varieties, so it represents a step up in both source and age. Richard Mayson has described the 20-year-old category as the point of balance in tawny Port, combining freshness and delicacy with the toasted almond and walnut character that comes from time in wood.
Ready to drink and good for several weeks once opened; serve lightly chilled at 12-14C with almond tart, crème brûlée or hard cheese.
