Description
Quinta do Noval 20 Year Old Tawny is made entirely from fruit grown on the Noval estate, unlike the house's 10-year-old.
Aged tawny port is blended to an average age rather than a single year, and the 20-year-old category is generally held to be the sweet spot, combining the freshness of younger material with the toasted almond and walnut complexity that only comes from long ageing in wood. Quinta do Noval sits above the Pinhão valley in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the Douro, and its terraced schist vineyards are planted to the traditional field blend led by Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. Fermentation is stopped with grape spirit while sugar remains, and the young wine then spends decades in seasoned casks, where slow oxidation strips colour, softens the spirit and builds the nutty, toffee-scented depth the style is known for. That the fruit is all estate-grown sets this bottling apart from most 20-year-olds. This is the six-litre format.
Serve lightly chilled at 12-14°C with salted almonds, crème brûlée or a well-aged hard cheese; an open bottle holds its form for weeks.
