Quinta do Noval Tawny 40yo

Quinta do Noval Tawny 40yo is a cask-aged tawny port made in tiny quantities and bottled to order.

Quinta do Noval sits above Pinhão in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the demarcated Douro, on terraced schist that gives the concentrated, low-yielding fruit the region is known for. An aged tawny is built from a blend of the traditional Douro field-blend varieties — Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão among them — fortified with grape spirit and then left in seasoned oak pipes for decades, where slow oxidation strips the colour back to amber and replaces primary fruit with nut, dried fig and orange peel. The 40-year-old indicated age reflects the average age of the components. Noval bottle their aged tawnies to order rather than holding stock, which keeps the wine tasting fresh: even at this age it is zesty and precise on the palate, with exceptional length.

It is ready to drink on release and an opened bottle will hold for a month or more. Serve lightly chilled at around 14°C with almond tart, aged Gouda or simply on its own after dinner.
