Quinta do Noval Tawny Port Colheita 1997 with Gift Box

Quinta do Noval Colheita is a single-harvest tawny port, aged in cask for far longer than the seven years the category requires.

Colheita is the Portuguese word for harvest, and a Colheita port must come from one declared year and spend at least seven years in wood before bottling. Quinta do Noval, on the Pinhão valley in the Douro, makes one only in exceptional years, setting aside lots with the structure to reward long ageing. Those lots go into cascos, old casks of around 640 litres, where slow oxidative maturation strips the wine of colour and builds the nutty, dried-fruit character of aged tawny. When the house judges a wine ready, usually after some fifteen years, a portion is bottled and the rest is left in barrel for later releases. The grapes are the traditional Douro field blend of indigenous varieties. This bottling is presented in a gift box.

It is ready on release and, unlike vintage port, needs no decanting. Serve lightly chilled at around 14°C with walnut tart, crème brûlée or a hard sheep's cheese.
